Materials: wood, plywood, acrylic, paint, nails, roofing nails

This semi-relief sculpture is a combination of painting and three-dimensional elements. I began using nails as a material in my paintings in university (York University had a wall in its library done in this way). I later met the artist who did the work at York who was 85 years old and still making his art in the same way. For me, the nails offer two things, a way to draw and a second surface to work on. This piece is another self-portrait, based on an image that pervaded my sketches..this figurative outline who seems to be rocketing forward with hands tied or perhaps firmly planted at his side. The acrylic base is outlined in nails and then related to two surfaces created by roofing nails. These two images are a rotary phone dial and our mail key here in Canada. I was pondering the amount of self-worth I was gaining from communication outside of person to person. Ten years later I find myself and those around me even further addicted to the feeling our phones can give us. Waiting for that next text message to tell us we're okay...

Nails and Paint are mounted to a 3/4 inch sheet of plywood

Dimensions (inches): 39W x 50H x 1.5D
