This semi-relief sculpture is a combination of painting and three-dimensional elements. I began using nails as a material in my paintings in university (York University had a wall in its library done in this way). I later met the artist who did the work at York who was 85 years old and still making his art in the same way. For me, the nails offer two things, a way to draw and a second surface to work on.

This piece is a series of hands, in various stages of 'development', reaching out, floating in an ethereal space. The background is on two levels thanks to the nails. I used a stenciling technique and sprayed over leaves to achieve the look you see. One of the leaves is actually mounted as a feature on this piece. There is a great amount of detail, using the smallest of finishing nails right up to roofing nails.

Nails and Paint are mounted to a 3/4 inch sheet of plywood

Dimensions (inches): 39W x 39H x 1.5D
